EFFORTLESS FRENCH: BITCOIN BIG BANG
We’re proud to present a very special screening of Effortless French, where we will be joined by the directors Vincent Gonon and Xavier Sayanoff for a Q&A. They will be sharing their own personal take on the the story, and insights into the production process, as well as taking questions from the audience. Perhaps they will even share the story behind the shirt…
With his trial for charges of embezzlement and data manipulation still ongoing in Japan, Mark Karpelès, former owner and CEO of the now defunct Bitcoin trading platform MT Gox, picks an interesting time to finally open up, offering unique insights into the story behind the bankruptcy and his own psyche.
The story of MT Gox’s collapse centres around the disappearance of some 850,000 Bitcoins currently valued at around $8 billion, making it the biggest digital heist (or heist of any kind for that matter) ever. Whether involved or just negligent, Karpelès as CEO has questions to answer. This documentary is the culmination of 13 hours of exclusive interviews given by Karpelès himself.
An interesting side note to the whole saga is the ongoing fight for fair compensation of the site’s users (now considered creditors since the bankruptcy filing), as the company finds itself in the very rare position of holding considerably more in assets than it owes thanks to the massive appreciation in the value of Bitcoin; the valuation for creditors having been taken at the time of filing. Under Japanese law, the surplus is distributed to the company shareholders, in this case most shares are held by Mark himself, putting him in a very strange position personally. Considered complicit in the theft by many victims, he may just become a billionaire from a series of seemingly massive errors and failures.
POP-UP BITCOIN BAR
